SEASONAL BLOG – Protecting Mulched Fallowed Beds From Blackbirds

Last week I cleared this bed that was planted with corn and prepared it for planting broad beans in April.  As the bed will sit fallow until then I spread a layer mulch over it. I then covered it with some spare bird netting.

I have a lot of blackbirds in my garden that will scratch up mulch in their search for worms.  The bird netting not only prevents the blackbirds scratching up the bed it also stops the mulch from being blown away in dry windy weather.  The netting is also easy to put on and take off.

Before covering the bed with mulch I added blood and bone and dolomite.  Just prior to planting the broad beans I will take off the netting and turn the mulch into the soil.
